As a child, Carl suffered profound deafness as a result of contracting meningitis and eventually stopped speaking. After struggling for many years in a parallel world, it was the actions of others that inspired and lifted Carl to make those incremental steps up.
Today, Carl uses these examples in his speech to show that regardless of how insignificant our actions may seem, they have the power to inspire other!
